Google CEO Sundar Pichai Discloses His Preferred Speed for Watching YouTube Videos: 1x or 2x?
If you’re reading this, you probably use YouTube a lot to watch videos – whether it’s for entertainment or work. In that case, you probably need to know about YouTube’s playback speed feature. People have different preferences when it comes to free time or work. But keeping this in mind, have you ever wondered how someone as busy as Google CEO Sundar Pichai manages to watch videos on the platform?
Well, we finally have an answer. Sundar Pichai, quoting popular tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee, also known as MKBHD, revealed that he typically uses 1X playback for the content he enjoys, but for everything else he resorts to faster options. “Very curious to see, I usually do 1x things that I enjoy and/or need to process deeply, but otherwise I go faster,” Pichai wrote on X, citing Brownlee’s survey asking users what speed they prefer.

For the uninitiated, YouTube offers the ability to play content at 0.25x, 0.5x, 0.75x, 1X, 1.25x, 1.5x and even 2x speed. Depending on the content offered, playback speeds may vary from content to content.
YouTube itself has previously revealed that people who watch content on larger screens like TVs and game consoles spend the most time watching it at 1X, the normal speed. On mobile devices, they spend the longest time watching content at 2x and 1.5x speed. This makes sense considering that when you’re watching content on your mobile device, you’re more likely to be out and about or in a rush than when you’re relaxing and watching content on a bigger screen like a TV.
